F1: Hamilton to drop five places on Suzuka grid

Lewis Hamilton will drop five places on the grid for Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix after McLaren decided they needed to replace his car's gearbox. Qualifying for the Suzuka race will take place on Sunday morning, after heavy rain on Saturday forced the FIA stewards to postpone it.

McLaren noticed abnormal oil pressure in Hamilton's gearbox during Saturday’s rain-hit Practice Three. The British team believed they had solved the issue, but when they fired up the car in the afternoon, the problem had worsened and they opted to change the gearbox.

The penalty is another blow for the British driver, who has completed only a handful of laps at Suzuka this weekend after crashing out of first practice on Friday. He is currently third in the driver standings, 20 points behind leader Mark Webber.

F1: Suzuka - Qualifying 10/10/2010

Qualifying postponed until Sunday at Suzuka

Qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix will now take place on Sunday morning after persistent heavy rain forced the session to be abandoned on Saturday afternoon.

Final practice had been a near washout in the morning, with only two drivers recording times, and with conditions worsening, the beginning of qualifying was delayed several times from its scheduled start of 14.00 local time.

The safety car was sent out periodically to check the state of the track, but with weather forecasts showing no sign of the rain easing - and with the afternoon light rapidly fading - stewards finally decided to call it a day at 15.18.

Sunday's qualifying session will start at 10.00 hours local time, 01.00 hours GMT, by which time conditions are expected to have improved.

F1: Perez joins Ferrari Driver Academy

Sergio Perez has been announced as the latest recruit to Ferrari’s driver development programme. The move follows the news earlier this week that Perez will race for the Ferrari-powered BMW Sauber team in 2011.

Perez, who lies second in the 2010 GP2 standings, will make his Formula One race debut alongside Kamui Kobayashi at next March’s Bahrain Grand Prix and the 20 year-old Mexican will now have access to the resources of the Ferrari Driver Academy to boost his preparations.

Perez began his single-seater career in the United States, racing in the National Skip Barber Championship. In 2005, he made the switch to Europe, competing in the German Formula BMW series for two years, before racing for the Mexican team in the A1 GP championship in 2007.

That same year, he embarked on a campaign in the British Formula Three series, winning four races in that category in 2008 and finishing the championship fourth overall. He moved to GP2 at the end of 2008 and thus far has four wins to his name.

F1:Mark Webber : I am the title leader, but I’m not the favourite

Speaking to the official website of the F1 driver for Red Bull denied it was the title favorite this year.
He said:

"
I don’t even think of it. This weekend is just another Grand Prix - just another car race. The other stuff will take care of itself. Maybe in the end I will have a few more points than anyone. If it was a 15-race championship I would be the champion now. But there are still races to go and you need to lead the championship after the last race - and not now."

In the interview Webber also spoke about the team game run by Ferrari for Alonso favor.
When asked if he thought unfair attitude of the Ferrari he replied:

"
Well, I don’t think so. I think it is the way it turned out for them as a team. Felipe had a good start, but the mid season was not so great for him, so he is behind quite a number of points. And I don’t know if we will see Fernando benefiting a lot from Felipe’s support again. It depends how it plays out on the track. I don’t think that Fernando needs a lot of help from Felipe."

F1:Peter Warr passes away

Peter Warr passes away

Peter Warr (GBR) Lotus Team Manager 1984 Ayrton Senna (BRA), who qualified and finished third, talks with Lotus Team Manager Peter Warr. Monaco Grand Prix, Monte Carlo, 11 May 1986.

Formula 1 is sad to record the death, in France on October 4th, of Peter Warr, well known for his management of the Lotus, Wolf and Fittipaldi Formula One teams in the Seventies and Eighties.

A former Royal Guards officer, Warr tried his hand at motor racing. He went to work for the emergent Lotus company in Hornsey in 1958, when he had just turned 20, and raced in sportscars and Formula Junior. He was good enough to win the 1963 Japanese Grand Prix at Mount Fuji in a Lotus 23 sportscar, but his greatest contribution to the sport came when he was invited by Team Lotus founder Colin Chapman to take over management of the Formula One team in October 1969.

Warr’s officer training and natural gifts as a leader shone through as he helped to guide a youthful Emerson Fittipaldi to the world championship in 1972, only the Brazilian’s second full season in the big league.

At the end of 1976 Warr accepted an offer from wealthy Canadian oil baron Walter Wolf to run his new team, which he had taken over from Frank Williams. They won on their debut in Argentina, with Jody Scheckter driving the Wolf R1 designed by Harvey Postlethwaite. South African Scheckter was also victorious in Monaco and Canada, and only lost out in his world championship challenge towards the end of the season.

When Wolf was merged with Fittipaldi’s flagging eponymous team at the end of 1979, Warr continued as team manager. In the middle of 1981, however, Chapman prevailed upon him to return to Lotus. Warr became team principal after Chapman died in December 1982.

He enjoyed a difficult relationship with an emergent Nigel Mansell, who was popular with sponsor John Player, and signed the upcoming Brazilian Ayrton Senna to replace him for 1985 as Mansell switched to Williams. Senna won six races for the team, before leaving for McLaren at the end of 1987, whereupon Warr moved quickly to sign reigning world champion Nelson Piquet.

Warr remained with Lotus until 1989, when he left to become an FIA permanent steward, and later Secretary of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, before retiring to live in the Bordeaux region of southern France. In March 2010 he returned to the Formula One paddock in Bahrain, where he was enthralled to see Fittipaldi and Mario Andretti demonstrating their famed championship-winning John Player Special Lotuses before an appreciative crowd.

F1: Lotus to use Red Bull gearboxes next season

Lotus have confirmed on Tuesday that Red Bull Technology will supply the team with gearboxes and hydraulic systems from 2011.

“The announcement is obviously a massive step forward for us, both in engineering terms, and as an expression of our ambitions for next year and for future championships,” said Mike Gascoyne, Lotus’s chief technical officer. “The gearbox / hydraulics package obviously plays a critical role in the performance of the car, not just on track but in design and packaging terms.

"This deal gives our design and aero teams a very exciting platform to work with. The removal of the double diffusers in 2011 will allow the whole grid to tighten up the rear bodywork and mechanical structures around the gearbox, and this supply deal will allow us to capitalise on that with our 2011 car. Exciting times lie ahead!”

Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner, added: “We are very pleased. The fact that Red Bull Technology has been chosen to be a supplier to another team despite its short history demonstrates how much we have achieved since our first season. We very much look forward to working with Lotus Racing from 2011 onwards.”

Last week it was confirmed that Lotus had agreed to terminate their contract with current engine supplier Cosworth. They are expected to use Renault power in 2011.

“Din (Kamarudin Meranun), Nasa (SM Nasarudin), the whole team and I are absolutely delighted,” said Lotus team principal Tony Fernandes. “It is a real statement of our intention to challenge for Formula One honours as soon as we can that we have reached this agreement and we are very excited about integrating the package into our 2011 car. I think people in and out of the sport are going to be following our progress even more closely now we have taken this incredibly important and ambitious step, and it makes next year even more exciting. The Lotus Racing dream grows bigger every day!”

Although they are yet to score any points, Lotus are currently the leading new team and are tenth in the constructors’ standings, ahead of Virgin and HRT.

Toro Rosso to be sold ahead of 2010 season

Toro Rosso será vendida até 2010

Red Bull chief Dietrich Mateschitz confirmed on Tuesday that the Toro Rosso team has been put up for sale. Mateschitz and co-owner Gerhard Berger hope a buyer for Red Bull’s ‘junior’ squad will be in place by the end of next season. “It is not a big secret that we have put Toro Rosso on the market,” Mateschitz told Motorsport Aktuell. “For the start of 2010 there will be a rule change and there will be no more synergy regarding design and construction of cars between Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso. “I see the necessity that we continue with one team only for 2010 but we will not sell Toro Rosso during 2008. We will only sell the team if it is put into safe hands. But it will be before 2010.”
