F1: Perez joins Ferrari Driver Academy

Sergio Perez has been announced as the latest recruit to Ferrari’s driver development programme. The move follows the news earlier this week that Perez will race for the Ferrari-powered BMW Sauber team in 2011.

Perez, who lies second in the 2010 GP2 standings, will make his Formula One race debut alongside Kamui Kobayashi at next March’s Bahrain Grand Prix and the 20 year-old Mexican will now have access to the resources of the Ferrari Driver Academy to boost his preparations.

Perez began his single-seater career in the United States, racing in the National Skip Barber Championship. In 2005, he made the switch to Europe, competing in the German Formula BMW series for two years, before racing for the Mexican team in the A1 GP championship in 2007.

That same year, he embarked on a campaign in the British Formula Three series, winning four races in that category in 2008 and finishing the championship fourth overall. He moved to GP2 at the end of 2008 and thus far has four wins to his name.
